This is a new list from Stroke Family of words to help stroke survivors build a functional speaking vocabulary.
The list is based on research of lists of “most used words”. However, spoken language is different from written language. The studies that have been done have only been based on written language. The Core Words list is the first one to be adapted to spoken language.
To come up with our Core Words, we researched how English is learned as a second language, conversational texts, words used most over the phone and other texts, as well as the most functional words for daily living. We also added the combined vocabulary used in the Stroke Family programs and materials which are also based on the most frequently spoken words. We left out words that are too difficult to say. Finally, we added more words that apply to the special needs of stroke patients, words about medicine, parts of the body, things they might use like “cane”.
There are many ways you can use the Core Word List. When working with Let’s Talk, print out the screens and choose some words off the list to make a short phrase or sentence. Use the key word on the screen to start the phrase or sentence or put words before and after it. Have them practice writing this with their alternate hand and make an effort to say it. You can do the same kind of thing with Lefty's tracing sheets. Use the picture on the tracing sheet and then make a sentence about it. You can use the key word on the Let's Talk screens or tracing sheets or completely different words from the list. If you have the card activity sets, you can use this list to write on the blank cards that come with the card set. Use the Core Words list to make your own "Speech Trees" with the SpeechTree(tm) software. Use the multisensory learning techniques explained in the Pathway to Recovery guide when working with Core Words.
With Core Words, you can put together words in groups or themes. Themes in this list are: food, clothing, parts of the body, rooms or objects around the house, medicine, feelings, opposites actions, people, places, money, numbers, parts of speech and more.
Not sure if a word is easy enough to try? Check this list. This list uses the smallest, easiest words to communicate with. You can add family names and places to this list to make a vocabulary that is just for you!
Searching for a word? Use this list to find the word you are thinking of.
More instructions are included with the Core Words list which will explain ways to use the words for speech practice and to make your own materials.
You’ll be surprised how well these words will provide a basic speaking vocabulary!
The Core Words list is already included in the Whole Speech Kit and Starter Kits and in the Pathway to Recovery guide. Orders for other items will receive the Core Words list by email. We recommend you have at least the Pathway to Recovery guide which explains our multisensory learning methods. This will help you use this list most effectively.
